It has now been established that there is a need for specialised nutrition in the management of cancer.
- 40-80% of cancer patients are malnourished at diagnosis1
- Weight loss of just 5% decreases survivability by 30-50%2
- Up to 22% of cancer patients die from cachexia3
Cachexia changes how nutritents are processed - decreasing appetite and increasing metabolism.
Standard nutrition does not address the metabolic imbalances unique to cachexia.
Weight loss and malnutrition associated with cachexia has been shown to lead to:4,5
- Decreased treatment tolerance
- Decreased quality of life
- Longer hospital stays
- Reduced life expectancy
